Periapical repair action and antimicrobial activity through calcium hydroxide-based dressings: a comprehensive review

Introduction: Endodontic therapy aims at shaping, cleaning, and disinfecting the root canal, being performed by removing all pulp tissue or necrotic remains microorganisms present in canal system. Among substances proposed as a delay dressing endodontic treatment of teeth with chronic periapical reaction, calcium hydroxide stands out. Objective: It was to demonstrate, through comprehensive review, main properties hydroxide, well its antibacterial action mechanisms. Methods: After literary search criteria, selected studies were explored for construction study, following PRISMA review rules. The protocol based on criteria major databases such PubMed, Medline, Bireme, EBSCO, Scielo, Web Science. Results Conclusion: A total 65 articles found. Initially, duplication excluded, resulting 35 articles. 20 evaluated 12 included developed this study. Calcium is most commonly used medication fight disease-causing bacteria, but when alone, it may not be able eliminate these microorganisms. association other medications incorporated into contributes positive results elimination more resistant bacteria.
